UK Garden Retail Rebounds: A Cautious Signal for Outdoor Buyers

Industry News & Buyer Analysis · 17 October 2026

Britain’s garden retail market showed a September recovery, but outdoor-product buyers should separate a better trading month from a broad increase in demand. The latest Horticultural Trades Association update offers a useful starting point for reviewing next season’s assortment—not a sales forecast for sheds or greenhouses.

What the latest figures show

In its release dated 14 October 2026, the HTA reported that garden centre sales rose 6% in September, while gardening-category sales increased 11% year on year. However, gardening-category sales for the year to the end of September remained 1% below 2025. The association also cautioned that higher operating costs can limit the benefit of sales growth.

These are garden-centre and category-level figures. The release does not establish a separate growth rate for metal sheds, greenhouses, animal shelters or planters. Applying the headline percentage to an individual outdoor-product range would overstate what the evidence shows.

SUM OUTDOOR’s view: review the assortment before expanding it

For importers and retail buyers, a practical response is to review the role of each model. A compact storage shed, a walk-in greenhouse and an elevated planter solve different customer problems. Compare your own sales, enquiries, stock age and returns before increasing the number of sizes or finishes you carry.

Keep the product specification and the delivery proposition in the same buying discussion. Record the assembled footprint, usable access dimensions, carton count, packed dimensions and assembly information. A product that fits the display area may still require a different warehouse, delivery or customer-service arrangement.

Turn a market signal into a clearer order brief

Before requesting a quotation, identify the target customer, intended sales channel, preferred size mix and packaging requirements. Ask suppliers to distinguish confirmed specifications from options still under development. Discuss replenishment quantities and timing separately from the initial order rather than assuming one strong month will continue throughout the season.

This is SUM OUTDOOR’s procurement interpretation of the update, not an HTA recommendation or a guarantee of future demand. Our garden shed and greenhouse ranges can be used as reference points when preparing a product brief. Final specifications and commercial arrangements should be agreed for the individual order.
